Make time for an earthquake preparedness plan
February is Earthquake Awareness Month in Missouri, marking a time to plan in case the Earth begins shaking beneath our feet.
You might not think Missouri is at risk of a major earthquake, but the New Madrid Seismic Zone, located in the southeast corner of the state, produced one of the largest earthquakes in the continental United States. It was so strong it caused the Mississippi River to run backwards. That occurred in 1811-12, and that seismic zone produces roughly 200 small earthquakes each year.
Since an earthquake can’t be predicted, who knows when another large scale one might occur.
Visit sema.dps.mo.gov/earthquake_preparedness to formulate your own earthquake plan, and to find out how that differs from other natural disaster plans.
